Cake Pops by Cakin' Around

I have to do a little bragging here about my Great Niece Kennedy Mae.

Yes, in addition to being a great Aunt, I am indeed a Great Aunt. Yikes! That really makes me feel old.

How cute is she and how cute are those cake pops? She recently celebrated her 2nd birthday and instead of a cake my sister ordered these cake pops from Cakin' Around. Obviously the Birthday Party theme was Toy Story which is one of her favorite movies.

I cannot believe the detail that went into these cake pops. Everything except the arms on Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head where edible.

Although these cake pops were almost to cute to eat we seemed to manage and I must say they were yummy. I loved the different candies used to decorate and since I really do not eat candy anymore, these brought me back to my childhood.

This was a fun and unique way to celebrate the birthday. Not to mention the ease of dishing up as compared to a cake with cutting and serving.

Cake Pops can be made into all different shapes and characters and prices start at $18.00 a dozen with prices varying for specialty Pops. Contact Tiffany at 816-213-0480 or Tiffany@cakinaround.com. To see if she can create some cake pops for your next event. For more information visit: www.cakinaround.com.

New Summer Flavors From The Sweet Tooth

I recently received a box of cupcakes from the Sweet Tooth that contained their new summer flavors. The timing could not have been more perfect as I was hosting a birthday celebration for my sister.

The new summer flavors are Key Lime Pie, Pina Colada and Creamsicle Sunrise.

While the kids just gobbled them down, the adults had a fun time tasting and deciding our favorites. We cut them in pieces so we had a chance to taste all the flavors.

If you have read some other posts on this blog, you may know I am a huge fan of Key Lime and this cupcake did not disappoint. Inspired from a recent trip to Florida, The Sweet Tooth incorporates real Key Lime juice, a unique graham cracker crust at the bottom of the cupcake and a key lime cream cheese frosting sprinkled with lime zest.

The Pina Colada cupcake was almost too cute to eat. This cupcake is topped off just like the classic cocktail with a straw and umbrella. Chopped pineapple is added to the batter before baking and the frosting contains coconut cream and a non-alcoholic rum flavoring which makes it both kid and adult friendly.

The Creamsicle Sunrise may just become a new breakfast staple. This cupcake has fresh squeezed orange juice, fresh orange whipped cream frosting and garnished with orange zest.

I had a great time sharing these cupcakes with my family and want to thank the Sweet Tooth for sharing them with me. We had a blast cutting them into pieces and taste testing all the flavors. The favorites were split down the middle with half of us choosing the Key Lime as our favorite followed by the Creamsicle Sunrise and finally the Pina Colada. The other half voted the Creamsicle Sunrise at the top then the Key Lime and the Pina Colada coming in third.

These cupcakes are delicious, fun and worth checking out! The Sweet Tooth of course has many other flavors to choose from as well so check out the contact page on their website to place an order. For more information visit www.sweettoothkc.com.

2011 Urban Farms and Gardens Tour

Get ready for GREAT FOOD – both growing and eating it – at the 2011 Urban Farms & Gardens Tour!

Urban agriculture is about feeding people good food – and the 2011 Urban Farms & Gardens Tour, a 12-day celebration of urban agriculture in Kansas City, offers several tasty opportunities to munch on locally grown food. Designed expressly to bring together growers and eaters, two of the events invite farmers and gardeners to celebrate the pleasures of cooking with locally grown produce. The Eat Out Local nights give a shout-out to the local restaurants which make amazing meals out of urban and locally-grown food. All in all, the week leading up to the tour is a going to be full of GREAT eating!

Chef Celina Tio, owner/chef of JULIAN Restaurant, contestant on Bravo's Top Chef Masters and recent runner-up on The Next Iron Chef, will host Gather, Share, Feast! You can enter a Local Appetizer, Local Side Dish, Local Main Dish, or Local Dessert to be judged by Ethne Clark, Editor of the national publication “Organic Gardening,” Gordon Roe, publisher, tastebud magazine, Kansas City’s own eating-well magazine, and Mary Pepitone, writer of the Kansas City Star’s beloved food column, “Come into my Kitchen.” Only 30 entries will be accepted ($10 per entry) and the winners and runners-up in each category will win fabulous prizes! Share your food with others potluck style

If you don’t want to compete, you can still join the fun of the June 24 picnic! Chuck Robinson of the Garden Center Association of Greater Kansas City, co-sponsor of this event, says, “You can share your food with others potluck style, or just eat your own food and brag about how wonderful it is to other picnickers! This is a community event celebrating the wonderful food produced in our city.” The event is free for all picnickers.

June 20-23: “Eat Out Local” Nights

Restaurants are an important component of the local food system and many are joining the effort to support local food production, as well as the local economy, and to use the freshest, tastiest products on their menu. Many restaurants will be participating in “Eat Out Local” Nights in conjunction with the Urban Farms & Gardens Tour, on the evenings of June 20-23rd. Katherine Kelly, executive director of the Kansas City Center of Urban Agriculture, which hosts of the Urban Farms & Gardens Tour, encourages resident to get out on the town. “You can eat local, eat well, and support the growing of good food in city neighborhoods.” Eat at any of the participating restaurants listed on the tour website and they'll make a donation to the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture.

Urban Farms & Gardens Tour

We ALL eat, and more than ever in recent history, people are interested in knowing where their food comes from, who grows it, and how it is produced. The two day, self-guided tour allows you to go see Kansas City’s farms and gardens, meet the farmers, and ask them how they grow the food you eat.

The Urban Farms & Gardens Tour, hosted by the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture, offers you exciting new ways to connect with the good food growing in the city. On June 25 and 26, thirty-eight urban farms and gardens across the Kansas City Metro will open their fields and garden plots for people to explore on the fourth biennial Urban Farms & Gardens Tour. Attendees are encouraged to visit as many sites as they like from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday to connect with the farmers and gardeners that feed our city with fresh, delicious, healthy food.
