Eat Local KC!

It is becoming one of the hottest trends in food right now and I believe Kansas City is on the cutting edge.
Eating local is something that is very near and dear to my heart. Having been spoiled for the last 16 years by my father in law, I have been lucky enough to get fresh home grown beef from cows that were literally roaming in his backyard. What a luxury to have hormone-free beef. He has decided he is not going to get any cows this year, and with my freezer quickly emptying I am so looking forward to the Kansas City Food Circle Eat Local Expo 2010 for many reasons.

The first: I will be able to find a CSA (community supported agriculture). What is a CSA you ask? Basically it is where you find a farmer that has what you are looking for and purchase a share of his crops, usually done up front. Then, throughout the growing season, you get your “share” usually weekly or biweekly. Depending on the farmer there will be delivery or pick up locations and times to get your goods.

The second: Getting fresh local seasonal and organic varieties or meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, herbs, honey etc. I am sure there is a CSA for whatever you are looking for.

The third: Supporting our local community and farmers. I think it is exciting to meet the farmers who are growing the food I am eating and would much rather give my money to them.

The fourth: It is the healthiest way to eat!

And Last: The free “How To” Workshops this year will feature:
Buy it, Eat it - Learn how to buy direct from family farms using CSA’s, farmers markets, buying clubs and co-op’s.

Can it, Freeze it! Learn to preserve so you can eat organic all year around.

Dish it up! Local chefs show you delicious ways to serve fresh produce and free range meats. The Shawnee expo will feature the chef from the Blue Bird Bistro and Independence has Jonathan Justus from Justus Drugstore.

This event will be held twice.
